Our local newspaper had a column devoted to online shopping sites. I was intrigued with what is available to us via these online sites! Here’s the run-down (headers for each site are hyperlinked):

• Become.com
  Become.com is a comparison search engine designed to help consumers doing product research on the web. Secret Amazon Discount Finder

For those bargain hunters out there, I just discovered (actually this was in our local paper this week) a “secret discount finder” web site! It’s http://www.deallocker.com/tool/secret-amazon-discount. If you do a lot of shopping on mega-retail site amazon.com, this site is for you! It’s the “secret discount finder” that locates price cuts on products from music to food to housewares. Check it out for Christmas gifts! Some of the prices are amazingly low!

Money Saving Ideas

While on vacation this month, I was able to get in some quality reading time, even if it was the latest edition of “Reader’s Digest”! One of the feature articles was on saving money, more important, how to end up with more money each month by simply not spending any extra money. I thought, “what a concept”, lets see what the article has to say! The article went on to explain how one family chose not to spend any money, except for the essentials. What a great concept! I thought, I need to try this, as I’m certainly guilty of spending money on things I probably could live without!

So, the family in this article made a “No-Spending Challenge” for 30 days. For this period, you buy only what you truly need. Limit essential purchases, and try not to stock up or plan too far in advance. Most of us have more than we need already.

What I found helpful from the article were web sites where you can find bargins and get a great deal on anything!

Here’s the “secret” list:

1. retailmenot.com – The site offers codes for home products, sporting goods, luggage, food, etc. where you place a key code in for a code to obtain a discount and where you can find the item(s).
2. currentcodes.com – similar to item #1.
3. dealcatcher.com – a good source for coupons, rebates, etc. Coupons are printable.
4. pricebragger.com – a site that will let you do a quick price comparison of items. There are others that work much the same way, and include: mysimon.com, shopping.yahoo.com
5. overstock.com and smartbargins.com – two great sites that partner with name brands to sell its excess inventory of merchandise. Example: Bill Blass men’s sport coat on overstock.com for $99.99; in the stores at $295! (I’ve personally shopped overstock.com and have great success with the quality of merchandise and price).
6. shopzilla.com and nextag.com – are comprehensive comparision-shopping sites.
7. zappos.com – if you love shoes, this site is for you! Terrific bargains on name-brand shoes!
8. kbb.com – for research on makes and models of cars, the “Kelley Blue Book” on-line is for you. What I recommend is print out pricing (dealer and private party) on the vehicle you are looking at; and, the vehicle your may possibly trade in. This gives you leverage at the dealership!
